Elegance is the only beauty that never fades. Audrey Hepburn
How do you dress for your child’s dance class, recitals, wrestling tournaments, or taking the kids to school? If you’re like me your attire depends on the day. If I forget to set my alarm, wake in a panic, well, I’m driving the kids to school in my pajamas and a hat. No joke. I’ve humiliated my children with my attire on numerous occasions. This is life.
Despite the little hiccups life throws my way, I endeavor to dress fashionably. I do not want to be an embarrassment to my children, husband, or myself because I made poor fashion choices.
This is not to say I don’t wear the team t-shirt at my son’s wrestling meets or my dance recital t-shirt at dance class. For the most part, however, I prefer to dress well — not expensively — but nicely.
In my opinion these are the items any stylish mom needs in her wardrobe:
Great fitting jeans. No baggy butt, no elastic waist bands — no mom jeans !
Capri pants. Look for a pair that is closer to the ankle than knee. Channel Audrey Hepburn. Avoid mid-calf at all costs!
Pair with a feminine floral top that is a little larger. So pretty and fresh!
Capri pants look great with sandals, flats, wedges, and heels. They dress up and down.
A mom’s best friend. Not short-shorts, not booty shorts!
Short sleeve blouse with draping or detail that creates a waist.
Ballet flats are a staple! I am wearing these same flats as I write this post!
They are perfect for jeans, skirts, dresses, and shorts.
A lovely, just-above the knee dress.
Select a cut that flatters your body.
For instance, I cannot wear the wrap dress. It looks awful on me. However, I find great success with A-line and fit-and-flare skirts and dresses. Find a cut that works and stick with it!
A cardigan. Rock it out with color, pattern, and embellishment. A cardigan is great for shirts, dresses, skirts, shorts, perfect, and perfect!
Skirt. Love skirts! Easy to pair a sleeveless top for warm days, long sleeve for cooler days, dress-up, dress-down. Like the dress, find a cut that works for you and go with it. Avoid anything too short or an awkwardly long, mid-length. One looks cheap and the other looks frumpy
Great accessories! I love accessories. Scarves, jewelry, and bags — I can’t get enough. A great accessory can be the finishing touch to any outfit.
All of these items are easy to mix and match. AND they are just as comfortable and easy to put on as yoga pants. Play with color and pattern. Who says a pair of mint green capris is a bad thing? Not me!
I found this fun fashion blog Mom Style Lab. This is really fun blog — I especially like the Community Lab tab.
Another wonderful blog is The Mommy Stylist. I like the Spring Shopping List on this blog. It has great, step-up-from-yoga-pants options, and budget-friendly.
Happy shopping! Make your kids proud.
