Bacteria and germs lurk everywhere. They especially love the damp, warm conditions of the wrestling mat.
The first season was an eye-opener. I received an indepth education on the many skin infections a student wrestler can contract. Those little germs and bacteria love to attack the wrestlers and cause all types of havoc.
In particular, ringworm, impetigo, Herpes simplex, staph, and MERSA. This is serious stuff. It is not a simple flu or cold bug. No, these bacteria mean business.
At the start of each season the coaches educate wrestlers and parents about proper hygiene on and off the mat to avoid attracting these invaders.
Easy Ways to Eradicate Germs and Bacteria
Perhaps the most important step is SHOWER. You would think this would be an automatic after practice, however, some wrestlers are exhausted and hungry. They don’t want to shower first thing; they want to lay down. WRONG!
Throw your kid into the shower with ANTI-BACTERIAL SOAP. Do not let them lay down in bed, on the coach, floor, or any other surface.
Second, sterilize their clothing. It seems like a huge hassle but thing about having ringworm or Herpes simplex. Now THAT is a huge hassle.
Wash their clothing (particularly practice clothes) in hot water and dry well.
Wipe soles of wrestling shoes, ear protection, knee/shin guards with ANTI-BACTERIAL WIPES. Can’t wipe it down? Spray the heck out of it with ANTI-BACTERIAL SPRAY.
Sounds extreme but I would rather go through cases of disinfectant than get MERSA.
Finally, the wrestler should wipe down after each match with anti-bacterial wipes. This helps reduce the risk of infection from the mat.
