Working from home is an ideal situation for many people. Not because you want to sleep in or wear pajamas all day. Working from home offers most people flexibility to raise a family, create a small business, or pursue extra goals (school perhaps). It is possible to make a living work from home. Despite most presumptions, working from home is work and does require focus and planning. Finding the right fit is important to your success.
First Things First
Look out for those scams. Simply searching “work from home” or “jobs at home” will turn up a long list of shady “jobs”. Every legitimate business should have contact information, positive reviews (search for “reviews xyz company”), and should NOT ask you for money. Don’t ever give your personal information to any company or organization that doesn’t feel right. The only company that may ask for a membership fee is a job board such as Upwork.
A V.A. helps with a variety of tasks remotely. Frequently these tasks are professional, creative (graphics), and social media related. It is an independent contractor job – meaning you decide the hours and which jobs you will take. Upwork is a good job board with many V.A. positions available; it is bidding based. Indeed and other job boards have V.A. listings as well and worth visiting.
Your Current Job
Consider asking if your company offers telecommuting. Many companies are offering telecommuting as a solution to worker needs and reducing costs.

Consider starting your own business. Writers can find work as a freelancer, web design businesses, products (t-shirts, soaps, prints, furniture), photographer, etc.
Remote Nurse (aka Telephone Nurse)
Insurance companies are actively implementing remote health care solutions for patients. Telephone nursing is a growing job market. Nurses (and they are nurses) help patients with health care education (think diabetes management), authorizations, and case management. You must hold a nursing degree. Check out MedicalJobsOnline, Judge, and Medzilla for openings.
I have had personal experience with telephone nurses. It was a great service and resource for any medical questions that came up between doctor visits.
Customer Service Representatives
If you love talking to people, solving problems, and providing great service this may be a great job for you. Corporations are always looking for ways to give great customer service and cut costs. A solution is the work-remotely customer service representative. You need to have great phone skills, reliable internet connection, computer, and good resolutions skills. Staffing companies include: Arise; AlpineAccess; VIPdesk.
Independent Sales Representative
Perhaps the most well-known include Mary Kay Cosmetics, Avon, Stella & Dot, and The Pampered Chef. As the business owner (independent contractor) you set up the parties, take orders, make deliveries, and promote your business.
Online education is a terrific way for you to put your teaching certificate into action. Positions range from elementary to college. In most cases, you will need a current teaching certificate. Don’t rule out community and local state colleges, or private schools for online teaching positions.
