Worst Recipe Fails and Killer Risotto
I am not a natural cook. My skills do not include the ability to take ingredients from the refrigerator or pantry and whip together a fabulous meal.
No, I am the type of cook who must plan ahead. I need a recipe with photo and clear instructions. I need to find the exact ingredients listed because I simply cannot determine substitutes.
My son tells me I am not a real cook because I need a recipe. Yes, he is right. Recipes are my crutch.
I was thinking, as I was cleaning out the refrigerator, what was my worst recipe fail? There have been many, for certain. But what is my worst recipe fail of late?
Barley Risotto with Chicken
Yes, this is the worst meal I have made in the past two months. It was AWFUL.
I had a recipe; followed it precisely; and then decided to make some changes. That was the first mistake. Never stray from the recipe.
+ Barley has a weird, grainy, mealy texture. I completely forgot how much I dislike barley. It is not appealing. Definitely not tasty in a risotto. What was I thinking?!!
+ Added WAY too much salt. I tend to under salt everything. This time I thought I should add more than necessary. Yuck!
+ No flavor — other than salt. The meal had no herb flavor at all.
+ Barley instead of arborio rice? Really? Never again. I make a killer risotto… with ARBORIO rice. Stick to what you know!
Now it is your turn to confess your worst recipe fails.
What is your worst recipe fails? Cake, pie, turkey? Did you make a romantic meal only to put salt in the dessert rather than sugar?
Did you try something new only to learn you really are not a French Chef?
